The Bowen Technique

'a cascade of beneficial changes taking the body back to its original blue print of a healthy and balanced being...'

The Bowen Technique is an amazing yet safe remedial therapy involving gentle rolling moves over soft tissue of the body at precise points. The therapy is unique in that it includes periods of rest between sets of moves to give time for the body to respond and the treatment to take effect.

Bowen aims to treat the whole person, not just the symptoms. Clients often report an improved sense of well being, feeling more balanced and able to respond to life's ups and downs more positvely. There is no hard tissue manipulation or deep pressure involved so it is suitable for all - babies, children, the pregnant and the elderly.

The technique can be considered for a whole range of conditions including; back pain, sciatica, frozen shoulder, neck restriction, whiplash injuries, carpal tunnel, RSI, headaches/migraines, stress/anxiety, ME, MS, hay fever/allergies/asthma, IBS/constipation, insomnia, digestive problems, fertility issues, and oedema.  It is particularly effective for new injuries and is increasingly used by sports men and women.

A Bowen session initiates a cascade of beneficial changes that continue for several days even weeks with clients often reporting improvements in seemingly unrelated problems that they may have forgotten to mention to the practitioner. Many clients quote that The Bowen Technique is more relaxing than a massage.  This is because the technique changes the nervous system from the sympathetic (flight or fight mode) to the parasympathetic (rest and relax).

Where does it originate?
The Technique was developed by the late Tom Bowen in Geelong, Australia in the 1950’s who was interested in ways to alleviate human suffering. He began to notice that certain moves on the body had particular effects. He gradually refined his technique and his Geelong clinic became extremely busy with Tom performing about 13,000 treatments a year. His approach is now known throughout the world.

What can I expect?
The first session involves a consultation and can take up to 1 hour 20 mins.  If possible please bring a list of current medication with you. (Bowen will not interfere with any medication you may be taking.) Follow up appointments take approximately 45-60 mins.

Bowen can be performed on skin or through light clothing. It is best to avoid any other physical therapies such as physiotherapy, osteopathy, massage, acupuncture etc within a week before or after a treatment. Applying other manipulative therapies will interrupt the healing process and undermine the overall effectiveness of the therapy.

How many treatments would I need?
Three to five treatments at weekly intervals are normally recommended. New injuries usually respond quickly whilst long term problems may need more treatment.  Many clients then book 'top up' treatments as and when they feel their body needs.
